Free Things to Do in Bellevue

Free Bellevue is not thin Bellevue. The city's best single asset — Bellevue Botanical Garden — is free every day. Kelsey Creek Farm, a working farm inside city limits, is free. Bellevue Downtown Park, arguably the best downtown park in the state, is free. Mercer Slough Nature Park is free. The Bellevue Regional Library is free. Meydenbauer Bay Park is free. Snowflake Lane in December is free. That is already a full year of visits.

Start with the Botanical Garden. It is 53 acres, open every day, and the Yao Garden, alpine meadow, and rhododendron glen are all part of the free admission (Ravenna's on the guide-tour tier). Plan two hours minimum; longer in spring bloom or fall color. The Visitor Center is a good place to sit if the weather turns.

Kelsey Creek Farm is the honest sleeper. Free, open daily, with barnyard animals, a heritage farmhouse, and a genuine 150-acre working park attached. If you have kids under ten, this is the free morning of the year. If you don't, the trail loop is still worth 45 minutes.

Bellevue Downtown Park: 28 acres, canal loop, waterfall reflecting pool, Inclusive Playground, and a lawn that hosts summer movies (also free). The best free lunch in Bellevue is a picnic here in July.

Mercer Slough Nature Park is 320 acres of Puget Sound-connected wetland with boardwalks, kayak launches (free launch, bring your own boat), and the historic Winters House interpretive center. Free, wheelchair-accessible, and reliably empty on weekday mornings.

The Bellevue Arts Museum is not fully free, but the museum store and the sculpture terrace are — and the terrace alone is a photograph. First Friday evenings have historically included free-admission periods; check the schedule.

Old Bellevue Main Street is a free walk. The bookstore is free to browse, the galleries are free to enter, and the coffee is not free but the sitting is. Two hours here on a Saturday afternoon is a genuine Bellevue experience.

Seasonal free events: Snowflake Lane (December nightly), Bellevue Family Fourth (July 4 fireworks over Downtown Park), Bellevue Arts Fair (July, free admission), and the Botanical Garden's Garden d'Lights (small admission after dark, but a walking loop earlier is free).
