Editorial methodology
How we rate places
BellevueExplorer Editorial Ratings are our independent assessment of what makes each destination worth a visit. They are produced by our editorial team, follow a consistent methodology, and are separate from public review scores on Google, Yelp, or TripAdvisor.
Why we use editorial ratings
Public review averages measure popularity and mood. They are useful, but they don't tell you whether a park is genuinely photogenic, whether a museum works for a family with young kids, or whether a neighborhood is walkable in a meaningful sense. Editorial ratings answer those questions with a consistent lens applied across every destination we cover.
Editorial ratings vs. user reviews
User reviews reflect individual experiences at a moment in time. Editorial ratings reflect the destination's structural qualities — things that are true whether it's a busy Saturday or a quiet Tuesday morning. We think both are valuable, which is why we point to public review sites where relevant and never try to replace them.
How destinations are evaluated
- On-site visit. An editor visits the destination, usually more than once, across different times of day and seasons where relevant.
- Category scoring. Each applicable category is scored on a 0.5-increment scale from 0 to 5 stars against the definitions below.
- Evidence. Every rating includes a short editorial explanation citing the specific features that led to the score.
- Editorial review. A second editor reviews the scoring for consistency across similar destinations before publication.
Category definitions
Not every category applies to every destination. A downtown park won't be rated for "Date Night" and a fine-dining restaurant won't be rated for "Walkability." We publish the categories that are meaningfully applicable.
- Scenic Beauty
- The visual quality of the setting — landscape, architecture, framing, and overall sense of place.
- Photography
- How rewarding the destination is to photograph. Considers composition variety, light, sightlines, and photography rules on site.
- Walkability
- Ease of exploring on foot. Path quality, distance, grade, shade, and connections to surrounding destinations.
- Family Friendly
- Suitability for children and multi-generational visits — safety, restrooms, activities, and inclusive design.
- Accessibility
- ADA and mobility considerations: parking, path surfaces, grade, restrooms, and universal-design features.
- Relaxation
- How well the destination supports a slow, decompressing visit — noise level, crowd density, seating, and pace.
- Hidden Gem
- How undiscovered the destination feels relative to its quality. Widely known spots score lower here even when excellent.
- Date Night
- Suitability for a memorable evening — atmosphere at golden hour and after dark, nearby dining, and overall romance.
- Value
- What visitors get for their time and money. Free destinations aren't automatic 5s — the experience still has to earn it.
Review and update process
Every destination is reviewed at least once every twelve months, and seasonal destinations are checked more often. When a destination changes meaningfully — a renovation, a new operator, a lost amenity — we update the ratings and note the change in the page's Last Updated timestamp.
Corrections policy
If you believe a rating is factually inaccurate, please contact us with specifics. We respond to correction requests within 48 hours and publish updates transparently. Disagreement with our editorial judgment is welcome, but is not itself grounds for a rating change.
Editorial independence
Editorial ratings cannot be purchased, sponsored, or influenced by advertisers, partners, or the businesses being rated. Sponsored content and advertising, where present, are clearly labeled and produced separately from our editorial coverage. A business being listed in our directory has no bearing on its editorial score.
