A decade ago "downtown Bellevue" meant a half-empty mall and a freeway. Today it's the densest walkable district on the Eastside. Here's how to use it.

Walk the spine

Bellevue Way from NE 4th to NE 12th is the core. The skybridge system between Bellevue Square, Lincoln Square, and Bellevue Place means you can spend three hours indoors when it's raining.

The two parks

Downtown Park (10 acres, half-mile loop, fountains) is the obvious anchor. Less obvious: the Inspiration Playground for families.

Where to eat

  • Breakfast: Cafe Cesura for proper espresso.
  • Lunch: Pearl for sushi, Joey Bellevue for a quick bowl.
  • Dinner: Daniel's Broiler for steak, John Howie Steak for steak with a view, Spinasse when in town.
  • Late: El Gaucho bar menu.

Where to drink

  • Lot No.3 for cocktails.
  • Eques at the Hyatt for hotel-bar elegance.
  • Purple Cafe for wine.

Where to stay

Almost any downtown hotel works. We'd pick the Hyatt Regency for first-timers.

The light rail moment

East Link opened and changed the math: you can take the train from downtown Seattle and arrive walking-distance from everything above.

A perfect downtown Saturday

Coffee → Downtown Park loop → BAM exhibit → lunch in Lincoln Square → Old Bellevue boutique walk → rooftop cocktails at the W → late dinner at Daniel's.
